Car Maintenance Basics: Tires, Oil, Filters & Service Records
Build a useful service record. Check the manufacturer’s fluid specifications, service intervals and cold tire pressures, then find guides for your vehicle.
Start with the correct owner’s manual
One replacement interval does not fit every car. Find the manual for the model year and powertrain, record the specified fluids, checks and intervals, and discuss your driving conditions with the service provider.
Check the recommended pressure and tire condition
Use the applicable cold pressure on the vehicle placard or in its manual rather than a value copied from another car. Michelin’s pressure guidance also directs owners to manufacturer recommendations. Arrange professional inspection for damage, unusual wear or ongoing pressure loss.
Match oil and filters to the configuration
Engines and filter locations can differ within a model range. Check the vehicle filmed, engine and applicable years. Use the relevant manufacturer information for oil specification, quantity, tightening requirements and procedures.
Record dates, mileage and follow-up checks
Include the service date, mileage, product specifications, problems found and the next inspection in your records. Keep invoices and work notes so future repairs can be traced. Community posts are more useful when they include the result as well as the initial issue.
